The West Indies Sail Heritage Foundation has reached a significant environmental milestone, according to Antigua News Room, diverting more than 100,000 plastic bottle caps from the waste stream and transforming them into durable community benches for schools and youth organisations across Antigua and Barbuda.
The achievement marks a major landmark for the Foundation's Ocean Love No Plastic No Waste programme. Since its launch, the initiative has resulted in bench donations to eight schools and organisations throughout the twin-island nation.
Each bench is constructed using a minimum of 12,000 recycled plastic bottle caps, illustrating how everyday discarded materials can be repurposed into something practical, educational, and built to last.
The bench donations form part of the Foundation's broader Ocean Love No Plastic No Waste initiative, which pairs environmental education with hands-on community action. Through the programme, students learn about plastic pollution, ocean conservation, and the four Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Refuse. Participants are encouraged to reconsider how they view waste and to recognise that discarded materials can become valuable resources.
The benches represent more than functional seating. They stand as visible, tangible reminders of what communities can accomplish when they unite around a shared commitment to environmental stewardship.
The Foundation acknowledged its programme partners and sponsors — the Sandals Foundation, CCRIF SPC, and the French Embassy in Saint Lucia — crediting their support as essential to making the initiative and bench donations possible.
As reported by Antigua News Room, the Ocean Love No Plastic No Waste programme is set to continue in late 2026 and into 2027, extending its reach to more young people across Antigua and Barbuda through environmental education, plastic recovery efforts, and upcycling activities.
The Foundation expressed hope that the programme will inspire the next generation to develop innovative solutions to environmental challenges and to establish similar initiatives that help keep plastic waste out of the ocean and broader environment.
The West Indies Sail Heritage Foundation is actively seeking collaboration with schools, businesses, community groups, sponsors, and individuals who share a commitment to sustainable development. Those interested in learning more or exploring partnership opportunities can visit www.caribwish.com.
